In 1971 he enrolled concurrently in The School of Visual Arts and The New School for Social Research in New York City where he studied with Richard Serra, Sol Lewitt and James Wines and received a diploma in Design, Painting and Sculpture . In 1972 he was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island. He traveled to Carrara Italy in 1973 for intensive study in stone carving with Carrara's master artisans. In 1975 he received a Fellowship from the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland and was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1977. He returned to Carrara and Pietrasanta Italy in 1979 where he maintained a studio and worked in marble and bronze sculpture.
